Your D lives exactly between head line and Base line. It doesn't touch the ascender.
Stroke order
Stroke 1 - The stem:
Start on the head line, pull straight down to the base line. That's your backbone. Keep it firm and vertical - that's what gives D its structure. The dot in your image is the starting point.
Stroke 2 - The curve:
Start again at the head line, just touching the top of stroke 1, then swing out and around in a full C-curve and come back to meet the bottom of stroke 1 on the base line. One smooth motion, no stopping in the middle.
